A New Era in Wildlife Photography?

As a wildlife photographer, every shot I take is a story waiting to be told. The thrill of capturing a fleeting moment in the animal kingdom is what drives me to explore new horizons in photography. On my last trip to Kenya in 2022 I used my GFX100 with GF 250mm quite a bit, still 250mm for Wildlife is often a bit short if you don’t want to crop in - I don’t use medium format to be able to crop, I want all that detail and quality that is possible!

That's why I'm ecstatic about Fujifilm's upcoming addition to the GFX lens family - the GF 500mm lens.

As a wildlife photographer, my heart races at the thought of what I can capture with this lens. It's an opportunity to tell stories that were once distant whispers in the wild. Fujifilm's commitment to innovation in the world of photography is something I wholeheartedly embrace.

Fujifilm's GFX series cameras have always been a favorite for me since I bought my GFX100, it gives me uncompromising image quality but the performance for wildlife has some limitations, I have used it mostly for slow animals, and some for still birds. With the GFX100 II, Fujifilm has raised the bar once again.

At the heart of the GFX100 II lies a 102-megapixel sensor. The level of detail this camera captures is nothing short of astonishing. The GFX100 II features a fast and accurate autofocus system, not as fast as my Canon R3 but a compromise I’m willing to make for these 102 precious megapixels. I will use both side by side depending on the situation.
