Exciting Firmware Updates for Sony FX3 and FX3A: BIG6 Menu and BRAW Support Arrive!
As a new owner of the Sony FX3A, I’m always eager for updates that enhance my filmmaking workflow. Sony has just released some major firmware updates: version 7.0 for the original FX3 and version 2.0 for the FX3A (with a similar update, version 6.0, for the FX30). These bring a host of new features, but today I want to focus on two big ones for me: the “BIG6” menu system and the addition of external Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) recording over HDMI.
The BIG6 Menu System: Streamlining Your Shooting Experience
The BIG6 home screen is a quick-access menu that speed-up how we interact with our cameras during shoots. Inspired by Sony’s higher-end Cinema Line cameras like the BURANO and VENICE, this interface organizes key settings into six main categories—hence the “BIG6” name—allowing you to review and adjust shooting parameters and equipment configurations at a glance.

For me, as an FX3A user, this means less time digging through sub-menus and more time focusing on creativity. Whether you’re setting up for a wildlife shot or a documentary run-and-gun, the BIG6 screen displays essentials like exposure, focus, audio, and stabilization right on the home screen. It’s particularly handy for hybrid shooters who switch between photo and video modes, as it keeps everything intuitive and efficient. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the traditional menu structure, this update feels like a breath of fresh air—Sony’s way of bringing pro-level usability to their compact cinema cameras.
To access it on your updated FX3 or FX3A, navigate to the settings, toggle the S&Q mode to Fixed/Variable, then set a custom button, I use the “4” button (or equivalent custom key) to bring up the home screen.
External BRAW Recording Over HDMI: Unlocking Pro-Level Flexibility
The other major highlight is the new support for recording Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) externally via HDMI. This is very interesting for editors and colorists who crave the flexibility of RAW workflows without being tied to internal storage limitations. With this update, you can connect your FX3 or FX3A to compatible external recorders like the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR and capture BRAW files directly over HDMI.
BRAW offers incredible dynamic range and post-production latitude, making it ideal for projects that demand high-quality grading. Previously, options were more limited to ProRes RAW or internal formats. While ProRes RAW is a great codec, it’s not supported in DaVinci Resolve, requiring workarounds like converting to CinemaDNG. BRAW, on the other hand, integrates seamlessly with DaVinci Resolve, streamlining the editing pipeline.
Just a heads-up: Ensure your external recorder’s firmware is up to date to support BRAW from Sony cameras. I don’t currently own a Blackmagic external monitor, and the Video Assist 12G HDR, released back in 2019, feels due for an update. With this new BRAW support for major Sony cameras like the FX3 and FX3A, I’m hopeful Blackmagic might refresh the 12G to 2025 standards—maybe with CFexpress card support for faster storage or improved HDMI connections for reliability. I don’t have any big projects lined up at the moment, so I’m holding off for now, but I’m very intrigued to try out BRAW in the future.
Why These Updates Matter for Creators Like Us
These firmware releases show Sony’s commitment to evolving their Cinema Line cameras long after purchase. For original FX3 owners jumping to 7.0, and FX3A users like me on 2.0, the BIG6 menu and BRAW support elevate these already capable cameras to new heights. Whether you’re a solo filmmaker, content creator, or part of a larger production, these features save time and expand creative options.
If you haven’t updated yet, head over to Sony’s support site and grab the firmware—it’s free and straightforward. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments: Have you installed it? What’s your favorite new feature? Stay tuned for more reviews and tips.
Happy shooting!
