My Best Travel Hack for Flying with Lots of Camera Gear
Let me save you hours of worrying about carry-on limits, gate-check roulette, and pleading with airline staff over why your 20kg+ camera backpack absolutely cannot be checked.
You want the secret?
Bring the wife and kid.
Seriously. That’s the whole hack. End of blog.
(But since we’re here…)
Three Passengers. Three Carry-Ons. Three “Personals.”
Most airlines let each passenger bring:
- One carry-on
- One personal item (laptop bag)
That means when I fly with my wife and kid, we’ve suddenly got six pieces of luggage space in the cabin. You know what that is? That’s a mobile camera store.
My usual carry-on is a
- Gura Gear Kiboko with big lenses
- A Gura Gear Chobe laptop bag that’s actually just filled with batteries, camera bodies, 70-200 & an actual Macbook Pro 16″)
Multiply that by three, and you start to see the vision. I can easily bring over 50kg of gear as carry-on—no complaints, no side-eyes.
My kid can barely lift his backpack and personal item. Honestly, they weigh about as much as he does.
If anyone asks? I just smile and say,
“It’s my kid’s bag. He paid for the seat. I’m just carrying it for him.”
“How the Hell Did You Get All That Gear Here?”
Kenya, 2022.
After a few nights in Kenya with the group, at dinner and some gin & tonics, one of the other guests just blurts it out: “How the hell did you get all that gear here?”
Wasn’t it obvious? I brought the family.
You bring love. You bring bonding. You bring memories.
But also, let’s be honest—you bring a lot of superteles, camera bodies, a 16″ laptop, and a ton of SSDs without ever checking a bag.
Disguising Your Obsession
Pro tip: the Gura Gear Chobe is officially a “laptop and everyday bag.” Unofficially? It’s the best low-key camera bag ever made. It fits so much camera gear and still passes as a personal item, I have used Gura Gear since day one, love it.
Airline staff just see a dad with his family and a laptop bag. They don’t realize he’s got more glass in that thing than most rental houses.
So Yes, It’s a Hack
Some people bring their family for the memories. I bring mine for carry-on optimization.(Just kidding. Kind of.)
If you want to fly heavy but still look light, don’t go solo. Bring your crew. Pack smart. Look innocent. Shoot big.
You’re welcome. (only drawback, you can’t bring the family on every trip, i’ll bring them on one major family trip every year)
