My Dream Lens: A 300-800mm f/4 Under 3.5kg That Would Revolutionize Wildlife Shooting
Imagine a lens that reaches 800mm without breaking your back.
As a wildlife photographer who’s hauled gear through forests and mountains, I’ve chased that perfect balance of reach, speed, and portability. Remember my post on dumb purchases? Well, this one’s the opposite—a fantasy Canon or Sony 300-800mm F/4 weighing no more than 3.5kg. It’d be a killer for wildlife photograpgers
Let’s break it down. Starting at 300mm gives you that versatile mid-telephoto punch for tighter compositions without swapping lenses mid-shoot. Zoom to 800mm, and you’re pulling in distant wolves or seals like they’re right there, all at a constant f/4 for creamy bokeh and low-light magic during golden hour. No more fighting dim apertures like the f/6.3-8 on Sony’s new FE 400-800mm G OSS—great lens at 2.5kg, but imagine it wider, faster, and still under 3.5kg. Canon’s RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 is a beast at 2kg, but again, that variable aperture limits you in dawn patrols. The new Sigma 300-600mm f/4, weighing barely 4 kg, demonstrates clearly that Canon and Sony have room to innovate—they could easily match or slightly exceed Sigma’s range while shaving off additional weight.
Why dream this up now—and why do I think it’s possible? With 2025 rumors swirling on rumor sites—Sony’s pushing boundaries with their recent 400-800mm release, Canon’s teasing super-tele zooms like a possible 150-600mm f/5.6L—this feels closer than ever. Tech like lighter materials could make it real. Take Sony’s 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS—it weighs barely 1.5kg and stunned everyone when it dropped, proving primes can be featherweight without sacrificing quality. Scale that innovation to a zoom, and boom: my dream lens. For me, it’d mean subtracting weight from my pack while adding epic shots to my portfolio.
Ethical bonus: longer reach means less disturbance to wildlife, tying into those culling debates I just wrote about.
If Canon or Sony built this, it’d change the game for wildlife photographers and beyond.
Someone has to dream big for ideas to become reality. Remember Ivo Nörenberg? He had a dream lens in mind and approached every major lens manufacturer, only to be repeatedly told it was impossible. But he persisted, and eventually, Canon stepped up to the challenge. They didn’t downsize or compromise on his ambitious specifications; instead, they delivered precisely what he’d envisioned—the Canon CN20x50. Was it expensive? Absolutely. But they made it happen. Without Ivo’s bold dream, the legendary CN20x50 would never exist today.
That said, I know the technical hurdles are massive—like the huge front glass needed for 800mm at f/4. But hey, I need to dream. I’d even be satisfied with 650-700mm at the long end.

my dream lens would be a 200-600/2.8 🙂
