There’s something deeply satisfying about testing a new paper. Make the first print. Holding it under the light. Running a hand across the texture. You’ve seen the image on screen. But now it lives. And how it lives depends on what you print it on.

The Go-To Standard

I’ve been a Canson guy for years. Their Baryta paper has been my go-to: clean, neutral, subtle gloss, just the right weight. It handles my blacks well. Makes the detail snap.
I trust it. It’s reliable. It’s safe. But sometimes, curiosity wins.

The Bamboo Curveball

I recently picked up something different: Hahnemühle Bamboo 290g.
And I have to admit… I’m intrigued. More texture. A softer, almost matte feel.
It doesn’t scream for attention, but it holds the image with quiet strength.

I made a test print, just to see. Same file I’ve printed before, so I know how it behaves.
And suddenly, it felt different. It's more calm. Not better, necessarily, just different enough to stop me.

A Final Creative Decision

That’s the joy of paper. It’s more than a surface. It’s a final creative choice.
A paper can either carry the image or flatten it.

I’m not switching; Canson Baryta is still in my DNA.
But the Bamboo might earn its place for color images.
The right tone. The right mood. Need to make more test prints.

Always Refining

If you’re serious about your work, you never stop refining.
Gear, sure. Workflow, yes. But don’t forget the paper.
The print is the final form. And it deserves the best you can find.
