My Photography Has a Soundtrack

And no, it’s not what you think.
What Gets Me in Flow
When I want to lock in (editing, writing, reviewing images, anything creative), I reach for one thing: house music. Electronic. Dance. Steady pulse, clean energy. For me, that’s the switch. That’s how I get to 100% focus and creativity.
My wife thinks it’s completely crazy. She doesn’t understand how I can write a blog post or work in Lightroom with bass lines thumping in my ears. For her, that kind of music means party, movement, noise.
But for me, it’s focus. The repetition. The structure. The clarity of rhythm without words.
It quiets the chaos in my mind and narrows everything down to flow. Suddenly, I’m not thinking about the to-do list, the emails, or what’s next. I’m just doing the work.
Not What You’d Expect
You’d think wildlife photography would pair better with ambient soundscapes or orchestral film scores. And sure, sometimes that fits.
But most days? I need something that keeps the tempo up.
Something that doesn’t slow me down or romanticise the process.
I want movement. Because when I’m in post, I’m not strolling through the savanna; I’m building something. Mood. Contrast. Form. Sequence. And for that, I want sound that pushes forward.
The Sound of Momentum
Everyone has their trigger. For some, it’s silence. For others, it’s coffee and jazz.
For me, it’s a tight four-on-the-floor and a track that won’t let go.
That’s what locks me into creative mode. That’s what makes the hours disappear.
